Legendary South African jazz trumpeter, Hugh Masekela passes on
Legendary South African jazz trumpeter Hugh Ramapolo Masekela, a leading figure in the struggle to end apartheid and “the father of South African jazz”, has passed on at age 78.
In a statement, his family said he had “passed peacefully” in Johannesburg surrounded by his family after a protracted and courageous battle with prostate cancer. In October, he cancelled a scheduled performance at the Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival in Rockville, Soweto, to dedicate himself to battling the disease, and called on all men to go for regular cancer check-ups. Masekela gained global recognition with his distinctive Afro-Jazz sound and hits such as Soweto Blues. The family said his memorial burial services will be announced in due course. Our condolences to his family.
